I letrially jumped out of my chair and danced after reading this!
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Can I join you?
- I literally dance on my chair and jumped after reading this!
- Buchstäblich!
- Me too!
- I letrially jumped out of my chair and danced after reading this!
GIMP is just like Photoshop, isn't it?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- On the surface, they look pretty similar (especially nowadays). Beyond that, it's a world of ethical and code difference.
- algo así
- Look deeper.
- It's so much better AFTER you config and install zillions of plugins.
- I love different tools for similar tasks.
- The Nexus 4 is just like a iPhone, isn't it? Same thing (a smartphone) to do the same thing (make calls, send messages, run apps), but working in a different way. GIMP is not (and has never tried to be) a drop-in replacement for Photoshop, which is why some of the people who have invested (in time, money and experience) in Photoshop struggle to get to grips with it. And yes, Photoshop can do some things that GIMP can't, but if people are taught skills, rather than trained in the use of a particular piece of software, then their knowledge is more transferrable, and as these missing features are added and matured, people gain a very valuable thing indeed: choice.
- You can accomplish a lot of the same tasks but it's different in some ways.
- In general yes, but GIMP is maintained by a community of voluntaries and not owned by a company.
- Photoshop is commercial software and GIMP is Free Software, that means the users have the freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software.
If proprietary programs are so bad, why are people still using them?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- They aren't bad. In the short term they can even be the better solution. However you're dependant on one company to develop the tools you're using. This can work ok but you don't have much influence over the direction those tools go. Also you are helpless if the company goes bankrupt, is bought by another company or simply discontinues the product (or service).
- If crimes are so bad, why do people keep committing them?
- Because they learned to use those programs in art school, because art school chose to teach those programs, because companies ask for them in the job market, because companies think these programs are taught in art schools, and the cycle repeats.
- IT IS CALLED VENDOR LOCK-IN!
- That's individual for every user of the particular software. I'm using free software to get my work done faster.
- Hi! I do like propietary SW, however open source SW usually is more helpful, in the long term talking.
- If cars do harm to the environment, why are people still using them?
- Proprietary programs are not bad, they are restrictive about your freedom: if you want more freedom about your artwork, you should use free softwares. Most people don't know any alternative, and some people despise free software because they aren't commercial. So most people still use them... help us spread the world about libre graphics!
Why develop Free Software if you could be paid for the same work?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Because it's a contribution to society.
- Would you take the money if you didn't need it? You refuse the pay, not because you don't need it, but to stop your mind from thinking the thoughts of a slave.
- If you could be paid for the SAME work then get paid! If not, some prefer to do the work they want instead of doing the work someone asked them to do.
- Because you love it!
- Why do people paint in their spare time? Why do people make music in their spare time? Why do people read, and write fiction in their spare time? Because it's something that interests them, it's something they *love*, and it's the very act of creation that provides its own reward.
- You can be paid to write free software too! And you can do things for other purposes than money...
¿PODREMOS INVENTAR NUEVAS METÁFORAS?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- con imaginación todo es posible
But if I use Open Standards, that should be enough?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Enough for what? If you're looking for freedom, what you need is libre standards and libre tool developed by libre people who have a libre culture. Open just misses the point.
- Better than total indifference, I guess.
- Good start!
- Open standards need open tools.
- It might be a good place to start.
But OS X is Free software too?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- If you mean "paid with my father's money" ¡YEH, WHY NOT!
- Fuck no.
- It's a sandbox for consumers, a playground for developers. Linux would be the whole city infrastructure. Why doesn't Flynn pop out and steals OS X 12 and releases the source code?
- It should be!
- No, it's not, but some parts of it are open source.
What if I am interested in design and not in technology?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Do you mean: What if I want to control my tools instead of them controlling me?
- If you're doing design in the 21st century, you sure as heck are going to be concerning yourself with technlogy.
- Software is not just a way to get a job done but constitutes a big part of your creative practice. This deserves your attention!
- You do both.
- Is it really possible to have a clear separation?
- It's all well and good being interested in something, but if you're going to take it seriously then you've got to at least entertain some of the things that lie on the peripheries of that thing.
- It's not only about technology and design, it's also about freedom.
I tried a Libre Graphics app and it had the features I expected, but the user interface was really different to what I'm used to. How can I get a version that is convenient for me to use?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- You could pay the developers to customize the UI for you.
- Libre does not mean free, you can pay developers to get what you want, offer yourself to help the programmer giving him feedback. You also can get used to the new interface: It could be better than the one you miss!
- Libre does not mean free, you can pay developers to get what you want.
FLOSS is great for experimentation but not for work.
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- You're obviously not even trying.
- WTF?!
- What is FLOSS great for?
- In the same sense as proprietary software is, really.
- If you don't experiment, your work won't evolve. If it is closed, you cannot change how you produce work. Your mileage will vary.
- I need experimentation at work
- Yes, it's like love.
- Sometimes FLOSS is faster, sometimes it's not. It is easier to automate and modify to fit your workflow.
- Those who make the worst use of their time are the first to complain of its brevity.
- Time ripens all things; no man is born wise.
- This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it.
- I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.
- The privilege of feeling at home everywhere belongs only to kings, wolves and robbers.
- Can't be work also experimentation?
- Did you ever try?
The quill pens used by Leonardo were not made by Adobe so his works were not so professional?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]Well known designers don't use Open Source. Will I be well known if I use it?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- no way. sure. diex.
- If you're good, you just need yourself.
- Why do you want to be the prom king so badly, anyway?
- Prob, how good are YOU?
- Well know designers use free software. You just don't know the right ones, obviously.
- If you focus only in the tools I promise you that you will never be a well know.
- The images you produce have way more influence on your reputation than the particular tools you use but using different tools might help you develop a unique style and method.
- Maybe it makes you special?
Doesn't using Open Source tools make ugly design?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- It's not the tools that make the design, it's the designer.
- Ugly is you!
- No.
- Nooit!!!!
- Ugly is the new beautiful.
- Using Open Source Tools will probably make your design different. Ugly or not is up to you.
- PAMSPAMSPAM
What's wrong with Adobe?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- They release proprietary software.
If I am really creative, it should not matter what tools I use?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- I hope not.
- In fact, doesn't matter. But in fact, it will affect the ethic and results of your work.
- Tools are cultural objects that deserve your attention.
- If you are really creative, would you not want the ability to influence the tools you use, and create new ones if others don't fit?
- And why not use a Windows PC...?
- That's true.
- If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
- If it doesn't matter, why not use Free Software?
Est ce que travailler avec des logiciels libres implique de publier son travail sous licence libre ?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Non, tu peus ne publier pas avec a licence libre.
¿dejaré de comer manzanas?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- No Comprende Señor!
- Si, pero porque sólo me alcanza para ver por la ventana
- The serpent deceived me, and I ate.
- sólo si no está Dios de la Muerte
- No, si sigues viendo la tele.
- At some point... but it's complicated.
- Probablemente ... para empezar a disfrutar de una dieta más variada.
Are Libre graphics tools cheap, knock off clones of proprietary tools?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Don't know about knock offs, but they sure aren't cheap.
- No, they are usually not clones. They are independantly designed to do the same tasks as the proprietary ones, whilst respecting your freedom.
- They are what we want them to be!
- err... they are just different
- No, they'r even worst than that!
If I want to do great design, how can these tools help?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- The same way any tool can.
- In many ways!
- The freedom in free software is good enough to handle your freedom.
If I can have an Adobe Suite for free, why bother?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Tal vez puedas hacer cosas que pensabas que no eran posibles. Es más, puedes sugerir cambiarlas y us desarrolladores te escucharán. De eso va esto, son herramientas creadas por todos y para todos.
- If i can be jewish, why bother?
- ¡Por que conocer herramientas nuevas es muy emocionante, bro!
- Don't bother, you're mind is not prepared for freedom yet. Live another life and maybe you'll understand.
- Because price is not the only thing that matters.
- You mean that you can learn it and to adapt it to your needs? You mean that you can share it and your personal adaptations of it with anyone you would think of?
- Ohh, I want to be paid for my job but I do not want to pay for the job other people do!
- Why bother about your freedom?
Will I ever be the same again?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Yes, mi amigo.
- No. You'll be like, 100% cooler than before.
- It's up to you, innit?
- It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.
- You will never be the same again.
Is my printer going to accept my file?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Absolutely.
- Yes, Scribus produces very good quality PDF:s.
- Yes! Just give him an open standard file like PDF.
Do I really need Photoshop to be a graphic designer?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- No. Use GIMP and Inkscape.
- If you are a good designer it does matter wich tools you use. This is why we should question the defaults.
- If you are a good designer it does not matter wich tools you use.
- I don't use it.
- Pixel-editing is overrated.
- How long does it takes to generate a PDF via Scribus?
- All graphic designers seem forced to use the same software to produce their work, strangely enough, the lion's share of designers don't really seems to care.
- You would if you could but you can't so you won't.
- All graphic designers seem forced to use the same software to produce their work, strangely enough, the lion's share of designers don't really seems to care.
- Without your space helmet, Dave? You're going to find that rather difficult.
- Did you ever try?
- Do I really need Air Max™ to run?
- Do I need the Creative Suite™ to be creative?
- Do I need Facebook to have friends?
- Do I really need a violin to make music?
Wat als mijn vrienden geen Linux hebben?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Maak er nieuwe vrienden bij!
Where is the helpdesk for all this?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- 1. Go to the project's website 2. You know what to do next
- There might be one near your place! Ask around.
- @mailing-list
- You can ask the programmers.
- On the web? Around you?
If I can't code, why should I care about source code?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Don't.
- No, they are called Lenovos now.
- Because someone else can care about it for you.
- Because you still want to be a part of the ethical, open community. Even if you don't/can't code, it's important to be part of the right movement.
- Source code runs your computer, you care about it even if you didnt know.
- You can learn (remember HTML?)
- You can read!
Shouldn't the government support Libre Graphics?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- La gente debería apoyar el Software Libre, el gobierno nos da igual
- Yes.
- Mejor cerveza o maria.
- Do we actually need the government to support anything?
- The government should use free software.
- They should and then there'd be free education for everyone everywhere.
- Definetely!
- If they care about continuuing a government they should.
- They do, undirectly.
- Probably. In some small ways they do.
Isn't Libre Graphics just for alternative people?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Alternative people do not use electricity.
- Yei, because Instagram is too mainstream...
- Lulz. Yeah, alternative to using unethical software.
- As much as alternative graphics are just for libre people.
- It's definitely for people searching for alternatives.
- Isn't freedom just for alternative people?
- I prefer apples without a bite
- You can throw your apple by the window ;)
So this is like the Free vs. the Pro version?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- So the free ones could never be professional?
- No, free software apps never differentiate between a "free" or "pro" version. The project releases one app, and you can design damn near anything you want with the app.
- It's free, it's pro and everything else you pay for.
Why do I need so many different programs? I just want one that works!
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Because the "Unix philosophy" is small, specific applications to do small, specific jobs. The Windows philosophy is bloatware spoiled by too many cooks.
- All of them programs work!
- A program is just a blind worker you can make work for you. Of course you need workers for everything you do. So there will be a program for every idea you can have.
- No you don't. What you want is to build your program that does what you want in this fancy calculator.
- The best workflow is achieved by a assorted ecosystem of tools.
- If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
- Modularity is an important aspect of freedom of choice.
- Buy a hammer.
- So you only use one single software in your daily work?
Why bother with free software if I can pirate adobe stuff?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Free software is your software. If you want you can influence it's development instead of being just a customer. Being part of a community is not always easy (especially at first) but can be very rewarding. It's a different kind of investment, but those who embrace it tend to get a lot out of it.
- Si te encanta el alcohol, el acero y la mar... sube a mi barco grumete!
- Why don't u be a real pirate? ARRRR
- Because if you "bother" with free software, you're supporting a better, more ethical social system. And please don't use the loaded term "pirate"
- Because Adobe let you pirate their stuff on purpose. A way to spread the software education and addiction. Then when you'll publish or become a bit more public, you'll have to pay them to be 'legal' with your studio. This is a situation designed to make you first a thief , then a slave.... enjoy.
- It's like walking around in a prisoner costume. Feels good? Will you brag of how good thief you are;)?
- Even pirates, before they attack another ship, hoist a black flag.
- Whence I be done yo-ho-hoin', I'm going t' shoot their sword.
- You close the way for alternatives.
- Pirating software does not build alternatives, it just takes other people's work without their permission.
- Why bother to pirate Adobe stuff if you can freely have free software?
- Let's jump on board, and cut them to pieces?
Good to find an expret who knows what he's talking about!
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- It could be, indeed...
- Good to find an expret who knows what he's talking about!
I am a designer. Why would I want to collaborate with designers?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Solos avanzamos más rápido, pero en grupo aprendemos los unos de los otros.
- Why will you want to learn more? That's so mainstream.
- Nooo, you will be assimilated.
- Maybe can your design be changed by the experience. Can you take the risk of it?
- You might learn something.
Is there any advantage for my clients?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- They can use the same software as you do. You can even provide it to them legally.
- If your clients value interoperability with other businesses, computers and users, and don't want to be limited by proprietary data formats, open source software is definitely the way to go.
- Open source software is much better at adhering to open standards than proprietary software is.
Isn't Free software for web and not for print?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Libre software is for everything. It's just that it may not be good enough for everything yet.
- Where are you getting such silly notions? It's for both.
- No, it's for a free mind.
- Free Software is for free people - no matter what they do.
FLOSS is great for experimentation and even greater for commercial work.
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- What you said.
- And greatest for experimental commercial commercials.
- Exactly!
- What's your question?
Free means bad enough to give away, right?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Free means they were generous and caring enough to offer it as a contribution to society's knowledge. Gee, you must never use Wikipedia, since it's so "bad" they give it all away.
- Free means free to use for any purpose you want. Free to share with other people. Free to modify. Free to share you modifications.
- Yes.
- Free means you are free to make it how you need it to be.
- No, free means, good things can happen.
- Free mean good enough to be a present.
PIENSAN LOS ROBOTS EN OVEJAS MECÁNICAS?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Be-e-e-e-e
- Beeeee...
- I for one welcome our robot overlords.
When is the next version coming out?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- The future starts TODAY!
- (facepalm)
- When it's ready.
- asap.
Where is the manual?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Right next to your wrist, it has 5 fingers.
- Probably under 'Help' in the top menu bar.
- Who ever reads the manual anyways?
- Let me google that for you;
- $: man
- More than a manual: the whole web to help you.
- Here: http://libregraphicsproduction.com/.
- On the web? Around you?
What would be the advantage of using free software, if proprietary tools soon offer the same 'hackability'?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- If they really offer the same hackability - including the freedom to resell your hacked versions for any price - then they are Free Software.
- Proprietary tools do NOT, in point of fact, offer you the same 'hackability.' Or else they'd be Free Software.
- Freedom!
- Proprietary tools exist at the whim of their creators - if they decide to discontinue a product, you're facing a dead-end. In particular, with proprietary tools that require activiation/validation (both initial, and throughout the time you're using them) you're at the mercy of the creators running the activation servers - if they shut these down, your tools suddenly stop working, or you'll be unable to reinstall them if you need to. Open Source tools aren't bound to a single "creator" - if the original project team are no longer interested in supporting or developing a tool, new people can take over. OS projects only die when *nobody* is interested in them any more - and even then, they can come back to life as soon as someone does take an interest.
- Proprietary software means, fundamentally, that you don't control what it does; you can't study the source code, or change it.
- Proprietary software means, fundamentally, that you don't control what it does; you can't study the source code, or change it.
- To be truly 'hackable' you need to allow access to the source code.
Do you want a operating system to have named its commands after digestive noises: awk, grep, fsck, nroff, ...
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Well, I don't know an operating system that doesn't do that. So you're out of luck unfortunately.
- I've never thought of it that way before. But yes, I still do.
- alias always-be-polite-and-talk-proper-even-when-non-sensical='awk'
- The digestive noises you mentioned were actually called after those commands.
- Would you rather have memory address to call? It's just symbolics, up to you to map it up.
- Groff!
- Body noises is better than software from a company that tries to patent everything.
- Hahaha, so funny.
- Allow the user to tailor the environment.
- Bon appetit!
acabo de descubrir la gráfica libre ¿llego tarde?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- There's some places where arrive it's just the thing that matters
- Freedom never arrives late!
- Nunca es tarde si la dicha es buena
- ¡Llegas en el momento exacto amigo!
- ¿Qué es eso de Gráfica Libre? ¿Puedo Jugar?
Designers need to make a living somehow.
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- NO WAY !
- Sure. Would it not be better to earn a living while contributing something that everyone can benefit from, instead of the selected few?
- If you do what you love, then sooner or later there will be someone who will be willing to pay for that.
- We like to think that our society encourages helping your neighbor; but each time we reward someone for obstructionism, or admire them for the wealth they have gained in this way, we are sending the opposite message.
- Money without brains is always dangerous.
- The price we have to pay for money is sometimes liberty.
- There are people who have money and people who are rich.
- You would if you could but you can't so you won't.
- Free Software does not mean you have to work for free!
Why is no one else using this if it is that good?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Somos más día a día
- Los cambios ocurren poco a poco
- Because they're conformists that think popularity implies merit.
- Why else is no-one using renewable energy, same problem.
- Most people are plain stupid.
- The world is full of people using it!
Do I have to work in English now?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Nope. Pero tampco estaría mal practicar idiomas ;]
- No, most good Libre apps have localization support.
- You should at least understand it.
- No tienes porque, pero siempre es mejor.
Inkscape is really useless!
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- If you don't know how to use a knife it's useless too...
- It has clones! Illustrator doesn't! It has many tools, but they are not located at the same places as in Illustrator.
- Inkscape is the best!
- It is great!
- I use it daily and I love it
- Can you define "use"?
- The lousy carpenter blames his tools.
- Illustrator is even worse...
- What do you mean exactly?
- Today's weirdness is tomorrow's reason why.
- I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.
- You can only compute what the software lets you compute, and only manipulate what you see.
- Freedom is not procured by a full enjoyment of what is desired, but by controlling the desire.
- Go away Troll!
- Useless for what?
- What do you mean exactly?
- Draw Freely!
What Will Future creative Tools look like?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- They could be everywhere, easy achievable and you could use in the way that you want.
- They'll be available over the Web. They'll support collaboration and open sharing. They'll adapt both to your task and to the available hardware resources.
Are Libre graphics tools cheap, knock off clones of proprietary tools
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]My teacher never heard of Scribus. Are you sure I can use it to do layout?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Yes! you could use... and maybe you must use it. ;)
- Teachers know stuff that was current when they trained to become teachers. Good teachers try to keep themselves up to date. Is your teacher a good teacher?
- Try it and tell me. ;)
- Yes. It is horrible to use, but yes you can.
- Not only you. EVERYBODY CAN.
- Do you design with your teacher's ears?
- It is time he updates.
¿DE VERDAD QUE GIMP ES LO MISMO QUE PHOTOSHOP?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- No lo es pero son similares
- ¿Es Photoshop igual que Paint?
- Sure! Just have to try!
- No, por suerte.
- No. GIMP es libre. Photoshop es privativo.
- QUE NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
- No lo es. PUTAAAAAAA
- En general sí, pero GIMP es mantenido por una comunidad de voluntarios y no es propiedad de una empresa.
Is this like becoming a vegetarian?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Es como tener tu propio huerto.
- No, OpenSource is like becoming a vegetarian in the sense that they are not 100% commited to freedom. Free culture is like becoming a vegan in the sense that they will always strive for 100% freedom for all.
- Yes, as both are thinking of others, both speak of freedom and both are alternatives for a better world.
- No.
- Yes a bit, they are both good choices for you and for everybody else (except for pig farmers and big proprietary companies).
- No, becoming vegetarian is stupid.
- Probably more like giving up Starbucks and Doritos.
- More like free vegetables eaten by a non-vegetarian person.
If the government doesn't support Libre Graphics, why ask me?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- they both do certain things better than others
- You are right, they don't. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_format is a conspiracy
- Because you're not the government.
- Because the government isn't always right.
- The government sure has its own opinion. What's yours?
- Forget about the government, please.
Is Free always better?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Free can have a price, but also a path which you can choose your own steps. And decided in consecuence.
- Is democracy better than autocracy?
- Of course!
- Yes.
- No. Freedom usually comes with a price.
- Is being free better than being slave?
- Maybe man!
- Love is always better when it's free!
So this is like the Free vs. the Pro?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Is this Pirates vs the Royal? Arrr...
- It's free as in freedom, free as in price, and pro as in professional (but not pro as in proprietary!)
- It's free, it's pro and everything else you pay for.
- Nooit! It's the pro vs the proprietary.
Does Pantone support Scribus?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Yes it doesn't, scribus supports pantone....
- Yes.
I tried a Libre Graphics app and it's really slow and I couldn't get much work done. But I see some weird new feature was added to the latest release. Why aren't the developers working on the basics?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Too vague of a quesion.
- Probably cause it works for them.
- Que huevadas.
- Developers like coding exciting stuff. The basics are not exciting, especially if the users don't complain. Please file a bug to remind them about what's important.
- I think that's what they mean by scratching an itch?
If my designs look the same, why should I go through the trouble?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Because Libre software respects your freedom in the process.
- You'll be free!
- You don't have to
- Most likely, your designs will start to change as you recognize new possibilities.
If I were a Teaenge Mutant Ninja Turtle, now I'd say "Kowabunga, dude!"
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]How to donate in order to contribute for using Open Source programs/tools?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Try to get the projects to accept Bitcoin.
- Bitcoin!
- Don't. You better donate to libre projects and ask open source to go libre. Open source just misses the point.
- Go to their Web sites and ask them if they are a libre project or an open source project. If they are the former, ask them to call themselves libre, not open source, because open source just misses the point. If they say they are open source, ask them to call themselves libre, not open source, because open source just misses the point. If they accept, donate.
- Go to the project's website and find the donate link.
- Most of these projects have donations links on their websites.
- FLATTR
- http://pledgie.com/campaigns/19064 to help make developers and designers meet in Madrid!
- Change the banking system.
Who should your computer take its orders from?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- From someone who knows how to use it. This should be you, but usually involves some training.
- You.
- From me and the people I choose.
- From Microsoft, Apple, Adobe, etc.
- Oh, I'm sorry, Sir, go ahead, I didn't realize you were root.
- From Dave.
- I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.
- What's that? Chicken?
- ME!
- Proprietary software means, fundamentally, that you don't control what it does; you can't study the source code, or change it.
How many famous designers use open source software?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Like 1.5
- I am!
- Probably all of them. It's in their phone, inside their TV, on most of the websites they use every day.
- Pixar i.e.
- More and more!
Isn't Adobe going to be angry with us?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- I don't know, who cares anyway?
- As angry as they are with any of their competition.
- Yes. Which is an added benefit!
- God, I hope so.
- Probably. It looses control and money - to you.
- Why?
- Companies do not have feelings, only live beings have feelings.
- Who is Adobe?
- No, I don't think so... Really.
Will my design look different after all?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- No, but you will be different.
- I hope it does.
- Only if you want it to.
This is way beyond the comfort zone?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]What's the reward of this?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Comenzarás a respirar de otra manera.
- Autonomy from profit-driven corporate control.
- Independance, freedom
Why do I have to read the f**cking manual?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- You don't, if you're good at learning on the go.
- You don't, that's why we don't bother making them.
- You will have less problems.
- You don't have to. Some people just like to start experimenting.
Is Open Design always produced with Libre Graphics?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- No, but it should!
- No. But libre designs should.
- I don't see why it wouldn't be.
- It's the best way in which designers can say "thank you" to FLOSS coders.
- Because they forgot to upgrade the teachers.
I don't like GNU/Linux systems, does that mean I can't use libre graphics tools?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- I also don't like you.
- There is almost certainly some GNU/Linux distribution that you would actually like.
- Most Libre Graphics applications have versions for Mac and Windows.
- You should try Ubuntu!
- No. A lot of Free Software is available for Windows and MacOS.
¿puedo asistir aunque no tenga ni idea de quÉ significa software libre?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Claro que sí, con más razón
- Claro es el mejor lugar a para aprender...
How many manuals do I need to read before I can start?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Just start!
- If your needs are as big as your head, then a lot.
- You can probably just jump in and learn as you go.
- None. Just look at the source code.
- This one: http://libregraphicsproduction.com/.
- None. You could theoretically learn how to drive a car without any lessons. You could teach yourself how to play a musical instrument just by messing with it.You could figure out how to set the clock on your microwave by hitting all of the buttons. You don't *need* to read any manuals, but it's usually the quickest route to productivity. :)
Can I ever go back?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- There should be an arrow on the screen that points to the left. Click that.
- Here? Sure.
- No, ¡estás de suerte! ;-)
- Of course!
- Feel free.
Un imprimeur: Ah ça ne marche pas? Mais c'est quel logiciel ça aussi?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]Does it matter what software I use, as long as the result is good?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Does it matter if you get to vote for your leaders, as long as they're benevolent?
- Yes -- to be able to collaborate with others, to share it freely, to make sure anyone can always open and edit it, even if the software's original developer no longer maintains the project (e.g. Nina Paley, author of Sita Sings the Blues, is forced to use an old Mac OS X version just to be able to use Macromedia Flash).
- Not to the quality of your work. But to your freedom and the possibilites of how you can re-use your work in other contexts.
- What if you cannot edit your documents in ten years from now? There are more chances you will still be able to edit them in the future if you use free software.
- Yes.
- Yes, if you interpret "result" in a broad sense, as to encompass society as a whole. And you should -- no one is an island.
- Yes.
If my hardware is proprietary, why should I care about software?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Because you don't want it to be brickable like UEFI-intolerant Samsung notebooks.
- Because the one being proprietary is no excuse to not care about the other.
- We need Free Hardware too!
- Because it is better.
- It's a good point to start.
Where did the names 'C' and 'C++' come from?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Use wikipedia.org
- They were grades.
If I can use a graphical interface, why use the command-line?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- In some cases, a command line can be a faster way to interact with a software because you don't have to load up a large interface with 30 options to achieve a single result. You can just type in what you need really quick and bam-an outcome.
- Good question. But I can't think of a single prominent Libre design tool that is command line...
- rm -r /*
- Mastery of the commandline, like mastery of language, offers real freedom.
- Because dialog is sometimes best performed in writing.
- Because Carpal Tunnel Syndrom is horrible.
oops...error.
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Not compilated in time...
- Someone else has probably encountered the error, and possibly bug reported it before you. If all goes well, it will be fixed within the next few months.
- cannot parse..........
- Easy to find what kind of error in Libre.
- Happens with proprietary software, too.
- Happens with libre graphic sometimes...
¿Merece la pena desaprender?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Solo se que no se nada.
- ¿Estás segura de que aprendiste algo?
- Sí, es necesario para evolucionar.
Where's my Pantone compatibility?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Stuck in Pantone's 70-years of copyright protection on their color tables. Pray they will never go bancrupt and have their assets bought by someone who wants to maximize their profits...
- In the fridge.
- In panttwo.
Why have I never read about this in Computer Arts?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Because they're probably paid by proprietary design companies that would stop paying them if they supported libre design.
- Why have I never heard about "Computer Arts"? If you refer to the magazine, a search for open source has 136 hits as of right now. http://www.computerarts.co.uk/search?term=open+source&sort=relevance&ct=
Isn't this just for a really small incrowd?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- It was. Not anymore.
- Yeahhhhh, man, it's pretty obscure and you probably haven't heard of it.
- Only if you want it to be.
- A kind of... geeks
- Yeah, but when the social system collapses, who will have the edge?
- It's so hip, I can barely see over my pelvis.
WILL IT BREAK MY MIND?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- You will be scared forever.
- Don't worry, you'll like it.
- Estoy boratcho tio.
- Yes. Your mind and soul.
- Break, like in jailbreak? Yes!
- We hope so!
Why can't Adobe just go open source?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Some companies find that while they have no problems going open, they are using proprietary components by other copmpanies which object to that. Don't lock yourself in.
- And why should they? They should go libre.
- Because they're greedy.
- Because the CEOs like their planes.
- Maybe they could but they don't seem to have enough imagination to come up with a business model that would make that possible. I've also heard that their code is very messy and that would be embarassing.
Isn't this just some American liberal obsession?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- No, it's a communist conspiracy :P
- Yep, it's those crazy communist South-Americans who are behind all that.
- The Free Software Foundation is headquartered in the US, but by the numbers, it's probably more of a European liberal "obsession." :)
- hahahahah
- KDE has a large German user- and developer base.
- Ubuntu, the most popular FOSS Operating System, is released by Canonical, a British company.
Surely you can't do a proper print design workflow in Libre Graphics tools?!
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- up to you. diex.
- Oh yeah you can.
- Yes, study this http://libregraphicsproduction.com/ (and excuse me for repeating myself).
prueba libre graphics
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- ¿De dónde lo descargo?
- Claro muchacho!
Waarom staat hierover niks in Items?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]I'm a designer. Why would I want to collaborate with developers?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- men, you dunno what your talking about...
- Because they make the tools you use right now. The tools you love and hate. Or perhaps the tools you have envisioned in your mind. Dreamt about.
- If you pay a developer to collaborate with you, will be amazed at how far your ideas can be pushed.
- Because you're not a developer. Developers need graphic designers, as graphic designers need copywriters, as copywriters need illustrators, as illustrators need a pen.
Will it be fun?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- How cannot! We have paper, just bring some pencils!
- I really need to sleep now!
- It already is :-)
- Depends on your definition of fun!
Free means worse, right?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- sure, that's why the air is so bad to you... please, stop breathing.
- No. It means free.
- Are you a dictator?
- Free means free. Sometimes as in zero cost, sometimes as in freedom.
- Just the opposite.
Do I need to learn everything again?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- You are never done learning.
- Learn everything about what again?
- Just some things. The user interface will not be exactly the same, but you will get used to it in no time.
- Only the UI, same functions, most of the time...
- Just the things you really learned, everything else will be just new stuff.
- Cool!
- If you only learnt how to use the tools and not the basis, yes, you need to learn everything again.
Isn't this just for poor people?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- It's ethic just for rich people who can afford?
- That depends ... is wearing handcuffs only for rich people?
- Isn't freedom just for poor people?
- I would use this amazing software, if it wasn't so cheap.
How long does it takes to generate a PDF via Scribus?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Depends on your document. Fast enough for me.
- Never tried but for sure the same time or even less.
- It's just a mouse click away!
I'm a developer. Why would I want to collaborate with designers?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Because you guys were meant to work together.
- Because you can have the tools that make the world more easy and beautiful.
- Designer have a great way to communicate your inner idea.
- If you are not the targeted user yourself, better to get to know some!
- Designers and developers need each other in order to produce software that is beautiful and functional.
Will my clients still trust me?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Usually, your clients want a finished product. They don't care about the tools you use.
- As long as you do good work and deliver on time, absolutely. [2]
- As long as you do good work and deliver on time, absolutely.
Why is there so many different licenses? How do I choose one?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Elige tu propio camino, elige elegir.
- Use the WTFPL -> http://www.wtfpl.net
- Choose the right one!
- See http://creativecommons.org/choose/ and http://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-recommendations.html.
- You should choose the one that fits your purpose.
Call me wind because I am absolutely blown away.
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- ok, you're a fart.
- Call me wind beucase I am absolutely blown away.
How much is it?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- What you want to pay for it. You can also sell it for any price, even on Ebay.
- A tee!
- No money (unless you want to donate), but a firm commitment to freedom and community on your part.
- The price of freedom is always dear, but there's no substitute.
- You do not pay for it at first until you want to start paying for it.
- Just a ¨Thanks¨!
- five
- It's more than much, cause freedom has no price.
- It's free like the wind, but it will cost some of your precious time.
- Yeah! Spambots.
¿DEJARÁ DE PICARME EL KERNING?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Jamás.
- No lo sabes
- Con saliva y paciencia
My tools are just tools, what's the fuzz?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- It's not life or death, but it's better to support ethical, free, open tools to do the same stuff.
- Tools aren't neutral and functional items but cultural items tools. They embody ideas, approches, ways of doing, methodologies... They carry and transmist their history, their genealogy.
¿LO LIBRE ES GRATIS?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- ¡la libertad no tiene precio!
- Dunno what u r talkin' about.
Why do they call me an end-user?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Because you're on the user end of the transaction.
- Because you end up using stuff.
- Because you need to contribute to grow with the world.
- You at the other end of the computer.
- I am not the end!
How can I make time for this if I need to take care of my children too?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Any seriously used application will take the same amount of time to learn and use. It's just sad that nowadays, reading the user manual already makes you an expert compared to the average user.
- It doesn't necessarily take much more extra time than the proprietary ones. Just download it instead of buying a proprietary app from a sotore, and use the thing. If you have any extra time, you might even file a bug report.
- Teach them how to code.
- You make time for everything, esp for your kids.
- By kicking out proprietary software. Involving your children in free software.
How will my designs change with this?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- No debería porque...
- Your designs will not change.
- Creo que no va cambiar nada.
- As much as you want or need them to change.
Why are there so little female developers?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Maybe because of events like those in this list: http://geekfeminism.wikia.com/wiki/Timeline_of_incidents
- The same reason there are so many more male geeks than females. Biology and society.
- It would help tremendously if more women would stop asking this question; stop asking for permission to participate, stop asking for approval. If you want to hack on something, go out and hack. You are a free woman.
- This place is too crowded with men, I guess.
- Why are there so few female car mechanics? Same problem.
- Because hackers and coders use rude/inapropriate/discriminatory language and expressions, behaving often as in a adolescent group of boys.
- They get intimidated, it's hard to develop in a strict language, they are waiting the next version of lisp-ada which will produce any program from a dialog with the computer.
- They get frightened.
- Good question. Help us with this please!
- Because not enough efforts are made (yet) to welcome them!
Does Scribus have support for Pantone?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Who cares, Pantone definitions are not libre. Just don't use it and don't ask for it. Use what's available or help develope a libre Pantone. If Scribus supports Pantone, libre graphics is not really about libre graphics.
- Yes.
- Does Pantone support Scribus?
Can I ever go back?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Probably not. Going all-proprietary in this world means giving up lots of everyday technology.
- No. You have already been assimilated.
- Feel free.
- You will not want to.
- Be warned : you'll can, but you'll not want.
- The only way is up!
- Back to the Future?
- Just press Ctrl Z.
I read that Scribus/Inkscape don't have support for Pantone, does that mean I can't do stuff with Pantone colors?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- You can still play with them.
- No, scribus does support pantone spot colors. Gimp does not yet, it can be possible in inkscape if you know to write xml.... I have used scribus for pantone spot colors before...
- Yeah...
- I don't understand.
Haven't these people ever looked at usability?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Either way, it's your chance to make a difference!
- Yes, they have. Don't confuse usability with the software having an interface you haven't gotten used to yet.
- Free software is a docracy, so if you are the expert in usability step forward and make it better.
- Some did, some didn't.
- Fake it till you make it.
- What's not usable, moving from win-dust to OS X has a curve, same thing this way round.
- Do you want to help improve it?
- Have you ever considered to learn another usability?
What do you mean Free?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Yo te ayudo y tú me ayudas.
- Free as in speech.
- Free to use for any purpose you want. Free to share with other people. Free to modify. Free to share you modifications.
- Open.
- Free as in freedom.
- In what manner are you using the word "free"? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gratis_versus_libre
How can you be busy with free software when there are still people going hungry?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Because you've got to choose your battles in life. I absolutely support efforts to alleviate hunger, and who says one person can't contribute to both causes?
- Ok, ill give the guy who lives under my stairs some vegan burgers, i hope he likes it........
- You think all our efforts are altruistic, just to create a better world? We like to think so, too. Our brain invents this lie for us, to prevent us from discovering our true motivations, which are not quite as noble. I am very sorry to disappoint you, but we are only human.
- Because through writing free software, you are changing the social & economic structure of the world, and in the end, those people will be hungry no more.
- How can you watch films if we still have no cure for cancer?
Which famous designers use open source software?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Me too!
- Me, though I'm UN-famous.
- Ben Fry.
My clients don't pay for this, do they?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- They're paying for your time to ask those questions, so they probably aren't too picky.
- Speak to the developers.
- Yes, they must pay double for unsupported things.
- They pay for my skills.
- Or: isn't this a way to escape from the short term product-delivery mindset and turn your clients into collaborators?
Do I now have to buy a black Thinkpad too?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Yes. There are also cookies.
- Of course!
- lol (not)
- Only if you want to look trendy and cool.
- No. You can use Free software on a brushed metal MacBook.
- I know it's boring. Take an old tower PC and stick in in an old wine crate and put it under your desk.
- Black thinkpads are astonishingly resistant and compatible and cheap when secondhand. And the red little joystick in the keyboard worth a try.
Will it run on my iPhone?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Probably not, because Apple designed the iPhone developer license terms to be incompatible with FLOSS.
- Potentially. Wanna port it?
Libre -- why use such a fancy foreign term?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Because there is no unambiguous word in the English language that means free "as in freedom." If you say free software, people will probably only think of price.
- Oh, wait! This entire sentence is in a foreign language, except that word :)
- Universal word and concept.
- Because "free" can mean more than one thing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gratis_versus_libre
- Ce n'est pas 'fancy', ni 'foreign' à moi!
Does Libre Graphics mean the same as Open Design?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- They are two things that go hand in hand.
- Open design is an ideal, libre graphics is a workflow.
- Hopefully could be a great idea, unfortunately at the moment the system that are running can't afford to lost money because of the open source.
Why do you teach us open source tools?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- For me, it's like teaching religion without give the freedom of choice. If i just teach Adobe, what happens to the free tools? Why not teach both of them and let the students choose their own path?
- Because it's the right thing to do.
- So you can adapt easily.
- Because they give freedom to whom use them.
- Do you pay every time you eat fish, or have you already learnt how to use a fishing pole? Have you built one? Cool, let's share designs & improve together.
- Because I believe in them!
- Somebody has to do it ;)
Will I be able to be equally productive?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Once you get used to the software, of course you will.
- Yes, see http://libregraphicsproduction.com/.
Isn't free software for academics?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- If Google, Facebook, Twitter, Oracle, and Amazon are academics, then yes. If not, then free software is some of the best software you could ever use.
- Please expand on the scenario about A,B, C,D, is this about ethics about A paying for D?
- Yes. And everyone else, too.
- Empower individuals and communities to create their own money. All money in Ripple is explicitly represented as debt, with transactions simply consisting of balances being shifted on a series of imaginary credit lines from the payer to the receiver. In order to explain how this works in practice, consider a simple example. Suppose there are two friends, B and C, taking a road trip, and they both decided to bring along a friend of their own; B brought his friend A and C brought his friend D. A knows B, but has never met C and D before and they may well never meet again, and similarly D has never met A and B. Now, suppose that A and D are out getting a coffee, but D does not have money to pay.
- Isn't freedom for academics?
- Yes, and everyone else.
If I want to contribute to Libre Graphics, do I need to code?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- You can even contribute money to pay a programer, or fundraise for a project.
- No. You could write documentation. You could test and report the bugs. You could simply help people out on the forums or IRC chat.
- No, you can give feedback to the programmers, make tutorials, share your experiences...
- No. There are a lot of possibilities to get involved.
What is this LGRU?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- It's the Libre Graphics Research Unit!
Do I need to learn to program if I want Libre graphics?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- No. but you can. And it doesn't stop at using a macro API if you need more...
- Absolutely not. Most users of libre software never touch the source code.
- Nope.
- That's whats so cool, you don't but you'd wanna......

Isn't this going to blow over soon?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- No, it's been an official movement since the 80s. And it's grown exponentially.
- Adobe would like that!
- 30th Century Tux An Off World Colony
- This year (2013) will see the 30th anniversary of the GNU Project, possibly the most well known name in the Free Software world. Free Software is showing no signs of stopping, or even slowing down.
- Or the contrary.
- Free software has existed in some form as long as there have been programmers. Proprietary software programs, on the other hand, tend to die out after a few years.
Will using Free Software make me look less professional?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- If you're incompetent, yes.
- Sólo si lo eres.
- No, not knowing what you're doing with the software will make you look less professional. And if your employers or superiors are aware that you don't use the proprietary "industry standard", they might even respect you more for being a risk-taker.
- The quill pens used by Leonardo were not made by Adobe, so his works weren't really professional?
- No. See http://libregraphicsproduction.com/.
- Bad designs will make you less professional. If you care about tools and not about design you will not be a great designer.
- That depends on your definition of professional!
Why do they not teach Libre graphics at school?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- They do. They even complain occasionally if we change something and they have to change their course material.
- Because they are Adobe's bitch.
- Schools teach what industry uses. Industry uses what school grads know. Like drug pushers, commercial software vendors give expensive products cheap to schools and students so they will only know commercial products when they go into industry, and industry must buy their expensive software. Go, capitalism!
- Good question. Ask your Teachers!
- They are busy teaching religion.
- I do teach them at the university.
Can you tell from the final design that it was made by free software? If not, what's the point?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- You usually can, because it does not add a "Created by Photoshop CS6 licensed to CmDrKeEn, Serial-Nr ADB334455" to all of your files.
- Ideally, no, you can't. The point is that you were a part of the better, more ethical social system. The Free one. Not just the convenient one.
- The final design is up to your ability to execute your vision.
- To have fast and powerful tools available everywhere.
- If you want to show off then add a little text that says "made with FLOSS" otherwise you might want to consider weather declaring your tool of choice is part of the message you want to communicate.
Can I use free and open source software and keep what I produce with it for myself?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- You can release your productions under whatever terms you wish.
- Yes, the tools and the output from the tools are separate works.
- Yes - the people that made your pen don't own the drawings that you do, and neither do the people that made your software.
Libre fonts are incomplete, otherwise they'd be for sale, right?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- As a typographer, sometimes i just release some weights of the font but not the entire family. So no, sometimes they're really a professional work.
- No, they are fonts that the font designer decided to contribute to society. Quality varies from poor to outstanding.
- At some level, all fonts are incomplete. The potential of libre fonts is unlimited, while the potential of non-libre fonts is limited by the proprietor.
- Lies, misinformation and too little googling.
- They are as good, made with love and care.
- No.
Isn't Libre Graphics just for amateurs?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Lejos de consederarme amateur, consediro la Gráfica Libre una nueva perspectiva donde enfocar todos mis trabajos y darles sentido.
- (French amateur "lover of", from Old French and ultimately from Latin amatorem nom. amator, "lover") -- Wikipedia contributors, "Amateur"
If I care about my tools, will it make me less creative?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- That would be werid.
- Maybe when just starting out. But eventually the tools just become an extension of you, and your creativity's on full blast. :)
- If you sharpen your drawing pencil, will that make you less creative?
- Not if you make your tools, too.
- Your tools will more closely adapt to your creativity instead...
- Tools become a part of you.
I asked about Libre Graphics on the mailinglist. Why did nobody answer?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- No tiene ganas de responder nada
- They forgot to tell you about http://libregraphicsproduction.com/.
Won't people steal my work if I release it under a permissive license?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- If u really want to share something, you have to let it free so others can improve your work and play with your amazing piece of art.
- Don't you want your work shared with the world? Isn't it good when someone likes your work enough to make a derivative work? And if you choose CC-by or CC-by-sa, then all derivates must mention your work and your name.
- A good permissive license will prevent any possible theft by making it legal.
- Perhaps, but it depends on what you'd intended for it - if you're not too tight on its context and you'd like it to be seen by a load of people then it can sometimes be a good idea.
Why is this button not where I expect it?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- You can contribute: choose it's place.
- You're wearing a t-shirt, not a shirt.
- It's on the upper left corner.
Will I turn into a geek when I use Libre Graphics?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Is that such a bad thing, anyway?
- You're one already asking that question.
- Yes but it's ok. Chicks dig it.
- Probably, depends on your definition of a geek.
Why are there so many GNU/Linux distributions? How do you choose one of them?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- There are so many GNU/Linux distributions because nobody is preventing you from taking the code and making your own.
- Here's a thought: start with the ten most popular one on DistroWatch, do a little casual comparison, and settle on what seems most interesting to you. As a designer, probably nothing will suit you better than the Fedora Design Suite (a "spin" of Fedora).
- Personally, I read about it, hear about it, maybe watch a video about it. And I ask about it, as well. What would be the best way to find out about the distribution you would want to use?
- Choose one if it doesn't work. Choose another one to get the best one you need to try.
- Choose life.
Aren't Libre tools just cheaper copies of Adobe?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- No, they are high-quality tools with their own identity that conform to a different set of ideals and have different uses. Some uses may overlap, but they are not clones.
- Some too-cheap-to-buy-Adobe-users would like them to be copies, but unfortunately they tend go their own directions.
- They're not copies. They're independent projects meant to do the same kind of work, that actually respect your freedom.
- Yes, but more unusable.
- Isn't Adobe stuff just overly engineered copies of Ivan Sutherland's Sketchpad?
- Adobe is a more expensive version of Macromedia, no they are not copies of ad-rob-me, they are alternatives to the status quo.
- No. If you want a cheaper copy go to the black market. If you want a viable option go Libre.
- And both are copies of a pencil and a paper.
- They are actually copies of Quark and Fractal Design Painter.
Shouldn't I rather spend my time on doing really good design?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- ¿No deberías leer más?
- Shouldn't you stop asking dumb questions?
- Rather than?
- Shouldn't you spend your time away from the keyboard?
Does Free software look too ugly for designers?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Designers think most things look ugly...
- No, in most cases they simply weren't aware of it to begin with.
- A hammer needs to be beautiful?
- Ugly is the new beautiful.
- Yes.
- Things which hurt, instruct!
- Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
How you can I work and make better the world?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- make: *** No rule to make target `love'. Stop.
- ¡Y trabajar de manera colaborativa!
- USE FREE SOFTWARE!
Does it make sense to use GNU/Linux if my hardware is proprietary?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- GNU/Linux supports more proprietary hardware than Windows or any other OS.
- It does. We are working on libre hardware designs as well. Don't worry, we will get there eventually. Human life is about transitions; we evolve.
- Your hardware isn't "proprietary" in the same sense as the software that runs on it. If you know what you're doing, nobody is stopping you from tinkering with your hardware.
- Does it make sense to do not my left hand if I have cut my right hand?
My company needs proprietary software to get a competitive edge.
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- If you need secrets in order to be competitive, then maybe your company doesn't really provide your customers with what they need?
- You can make a difference using Libre Graphics
- We like to think that our society encourages helping your neighbor; but each time we reward someone for obstructionism, or admire them for the wealth they have gained in this way, we are sending the opposite message.
- Software is not just a way to get a job done but they constitute a vital part of your creative practice. You should have the right to study how the program works, and change it to make it do what you wish.
Isn't Libre Graphics just for PROS?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- It's for anyone.
- It's there for everyone!
How long does it takes to generate a PDF via Scribus?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Um, a few seconds.
- Bah! 3 clicks!
- How long is a metre pole?
- Rome wasn't built in a day.
I read that Scribus/Inkscape don't have support for Pantone, does that mean I need to work in black and white?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Only if you want to. Pantone owns the name for some pigment mixes used at print shops. They don't own colour.
- No, black and white also are owned by Pantone®
- Panettone is delicious with a little butter but color management is not a big problem in scribus and inkscape.
- Free is the new black!
Will my .sla files open in InDesign?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Nope. But why is this important?
¿Por qué pensamos que lo gratis es indefectiblemente de mala calidad?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- porque estamos dominados por prejuicios
The developers have to eat. How do people earn money writing Libre Graphics applications?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- They get payed, obviously.
- Users can pay the developers! When you love your tools and you own the tools it's just common sense that you feel enticed to contribute for their improvement.
- Some of the developers actually get paid. Others do it on the side. Somehow, it works.
- They will be heros & called everywhere & be payed awesome fees to make it work!
- Most of them are paid by companies, others work in their free time.
- Click here to make a donation.
If I can use the command-line, why use a graphical interface?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- If you like command line, then stick to it. On my side it is way easier too teach something visual like a grapical interface than to teach people to remember command lines. it is a question of intuitivity.
- physical connection - spatial relationship
- Don't. Use what you're most comfortable with. Celebrate the fact you have a choice.
Will this run on my Mac?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- You should totally switch to GNU/Linux, though.
- The most popular libre graphics tools will run like a normal Mac app, yes. If the one you are interested in does not, it might run with 'X11,' a unix compatibility tool; and you can run a GNU+Linux system on your Mac desktop with the libre Virtual Box tool, which is convenient but may be slow. If you need speed, you can install GNU+Linux directly and reboot into it when you need to.
- yaay
- If you got a written note from Steve.
- Ask Apple CEOs & stockholders if they will let loose the leash on engineers to bring Apple back to the reason why it was founded. THOUGH THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN!
- Many FOSS tools also run on OS X. Ubuntu will also run on mac hardware.
Will it break my computer?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- If by saying break you mean break free... ask Queen!
- It will break your mind!
- They did make it unusable, noone is born an operating systems connaisseur, its like a game! So yeah, it will break your mind to configurate it to the right state.
- ¿SE COMERÁ EL RESTO DE MI MANZANA?
Who do I call when the software breaks?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- God
- You bug report it on the project's bug tracker website, and it may get fixed soon.
- Try google. Often other people have had the same issues and found and posted solutions or workarounds. If it is not the case, file a bug at the project bugtracker.
- You can hire any programmer of your choice, because everybody has the right to access and modify the source code of Free/Libre/Open Source software.
Why do these programs all look different?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- skdhaksdhkasdh....Mi no entender nada
- Because they were designed by diverse teams of people, instead of imposed from above by one conglomorate calle Adobe. Duh.
- Let's see for ourselves.
- Why do all people look different?
Will my .indd files open in Scribus?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Nope.
- Are you sure In-Design will open your .indd files after the next upgrade cycle?
- What is an .indd file?
From a famous print graphic designer: Why can you design a webpage by editing the source code and not do the same for print design?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- You can. BTDT, in PCL, because it was the easiest way to add the necessary commands directly into a text file with a text editor in order to get the print just right.
- You can. It's called Postscript.
- The Print doesn't support it self on source-code, since its physical.
- Because no-libre software doesn't allow you to do that.
- Some print designers publish the source files they used to create their work, in which case you can do this. Some people call this "Open Design".
I'm tired
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- clntudp_create: out of memory.
- Yo con hambre y sed.
- I need sleep too.
- When sleep mode was first introduced it was usually not tested.
Photoshop already works for me. Why should I use something else?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Cambiar es revolucionario.
- Because freedom > convenience.
- I'm not trying to convert anyone. If it works for you keep it.
- Because you are smart and understand that each tool embodies the particular world views of its authors. The more tools you use the more you free your practice from outside constraints.
- Cause photoshop doesn't listen to you if you don't pay them.
- It's a nice tool but it doesn't fulfil all the bitmap workflow. And you need a free and easy to grab alternative.
- How long does it takes to generate a PDF via Scribus?
Why is nobody ever talking about this at ATypI?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- What is ATYPI?
- They're afraid of being stigmatized as anti-profit hippies.
- ¿Que estas hablando?
- Actually they do talk about this at ATypI. I know because I keep going to their meetings and I am even on the board. I even gave a talk about a Libre program TTFAutohint. :-) There is light. Keep going!
- Some do talk about this, but the conversations have to be carried out in secret, covert operations and stealth. Then one day, enough people are talking and the revolution is afoot...
- They do actually. I do. Come to ATypI and talk about it too! :-)
- Designers like to think they are very creative but sometimes they can be very conservative about conforming to standard ideas of what is "professional".
Two of the most famous products of Berkeley are LSD and Unix. I don't think that this is a coincidence.
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- 1+1 = 2
- Innovative and Powerful!
- Me neither.
- The sum of the parts is greater than the whole.
Will this run on my PC?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Yes. A few apps are limited to certain operating systems, but the majority of it runs on all of them, and will even look and feel the same regardless of the platform.
- Yes. Preferably, with that "PC" running GNU/Linux (PC =/= Windows computer).
- You need to use the Linux installer. Everything will work then.
- Yes. If not, you can make it run on your PC, or pay someone to do it for you.
- Yes, and also in your toaster if you want.
Isn't this stuff just for people who have too much free time?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Define free-time first
- Who has free time, i'd like to buy some from them.
- There is no such thing as free time. There is just time left. Like copy left.
- Yes. We should ban people from having free time - too many people are creating art, writing fiction, composing music, and generally doing the things they *love* during their free time. There is beauty in code, and programming can be just as much of an artistic expression as a sculpture or song.
But isn't Photoshop way more awesome than GIMP?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- It's way more bloated, and doesn't respect your freedom. So, all things being equal, I'd say no.
- True, but will not run natively on Linux, and not Free or Libre.
- If you think it is, then help make GIMP awesome. Since it's free software, you really can. :)
- No, really.
- Yes ... I mean No!
- Isn't Gimp way more awesome than Photoshop? F*ck Yeah!
- The best is the enemy of the good.
- Unfortunately, tools often suffer from overdetermined functionality and are full of assumptions. You should be able to change these assumptions!
- Photoshop is lacking hacking.
- Photoshop is commercial software and Gimp is free.
- There's more than one way to do it!
What do I do when I find a bug?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- I cry!
- Report it to the project's bug tracker system (probably easy to find on its website).
- Document it to make it a feature!
- Let the developers know, and include instructions and a test-case if possible. Written almost 14 years ago, and still true today: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html
- You can see if anyone else has found it and how they dealt with it. If not, then you can report a new bug and help the developers.
Why do you keep using this software if it makes you cry using it?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Because I use contact lens and thus, crying helps my eyes to get comfortable.
- Because someone else chose SAP R/3 over the spreadsheet that would be sufficient to replace it.
- I don't use any software, that would feel awkward to me.
- Fortunately, it makes me laugh too.
Bruno Maag said designing the Ubuntu fonts by working closely with the Ubuntu community reminded him of being back in school. Will I be questioned about all my decisions, too?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]¿Necesito café para vivir mejor?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Isn't coffee just for academics?
What is this command-line about?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- cat menu | grep shrimp | test -lt $10
- $: man magic
- It's magic!
- The command line allows us to finish our work faster and rest our hands on the keyboard at the same time.
- sudo power
- On the commandline the application can be built, and the solution invented, by users themselves.
- The commandline provides functions, not applications, methods, not solutions.
- The GNU/Linux commandline is a ludic interface, playful, user-generated and user-driven, flexible, low-cost and cooperative.
Is this software for poor people?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Apparently not. There have been complaints that FLOSS is most accessible to comparativley well-off "first worlders" (with slogans like "FLOSS is made by the first world for the first world"). Poor people are sometimes restricited to using pirated and trojaned proprietary software, because their access to software is via other people who want to gain profits from their desperate need to be connected.
- Is poor people made of free hardware?
- Realistically, no, it isn't. It's for smart, creative, middle class people.
- It is! I'm poor too!
- No, 'poor' people do not this software at all, the only use Facebook and watch TV programs like Gran Hermano 14.
- Obviously is for smart people, so... not poor at all.
- Being precise, it's just the opposite. Poor people usually don't have enough time for taking the "risky way".
- For all of us.
- It is for everybody!
Why doesn't this work like I'm used to?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Because they didn't set out to directly clone what you're used to.
- The world changes. Sometimes for worse, sometimes for better.
- Remember the last time you said that.
- Because not all flowers do have the same fragrances.
- Remember switching from ironing to surfing. Both a board, different experiences.
If GNU/Linux would do black boxes like Apple, but in a proper way, wouldn't it take off more easily?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Black boxes?
- Popularity and profits is always easier to achieve if you are willing to trade off some ethics.
- GNU/Linux is actually the most used operating systems, it runs on most servers, DVD players, etc. Still, most people don't know about those free black boxes. So I guess the answer is no.
Does working with Free software mean using Free fonts too?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- No. You are free to choose what you want to use. But what's the point on using free software and using non-free fonts? Free software is not about software any more, the whole point now is free culture.
- Not if you don't want to. But there are enough free fonts on openfontlibrary and elsewhere to do just about anything
- You do not have to, but why not?
- It might. There are lots of good ones. But you can also use the proprietary ones.
What is this aptitude about?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Hello! I pasted here some information for you! It's from the text you get when putting 'man aptitude' into your command line: Description aptitude is a text-based interface to the Debian GNU/Linux package system. It allows the user to view the list of packages and to perform package management tasks such as installing, upgrading, and removing packages. Actions may be performed from a visual interface or from the command-line.
- Good question. What is this weird packaging system that goes on in the back of the os and only super users can config their computers?
- About Fuck you!
So now I will design for free too?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- If you want, your call.
- fOR FREEDOM!
- You will design IN FREEDOM, but the tools you use have no bearing on what you are able to charge for your designs. Free as in freedom, not as in price.
- Freedom is not about price.
- Only if you want to.
- Design for love, Work for money.
- FREE like free speech and not like free beer!
This is fine for people in developing countries, but I can afford Photoshop. Why bother?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- Nobody wants you to give up Photoshop if you can afford it and are happy with it. In fact, many users of other apps will actually be happy if you stick to it instead of entering their community and bicker about "why $app is not more like Photoshop".
- If i invent my own coin, will you pay for it?
- Would you stop thinking about price for one fuckin' second, and consider ethics, too?
- Freedom comes with a price as well!
- People in developing countries get Photoshop for free! Floss is not about money!
- All this is not about money my friend, it is about freedom.
Isn't Freedom just another word for nothing left to lose?
[WRITE YOUR OPINION] [SEE POSTERS]- When you have freedom you have something to lose.
- No, freedom is another word for "you get to do what you choose."
- There is freedom *FROM* and freedom *TO*.
- Nope. When thinking this, you might end up in oppression, as well.
- When you got nothin', you got nothin' to lose.
- And nothin' ain't worth nothin' but it's free.
- Freedom is just another word for Libre Graphics!
